Behr History

Soon after the Second World War, our founder, Otho Behr, Jr. began selling linseed oil to paint stores from the back of his woody station wagon. His customers quickly made it known that they needed something that would perform better on redwood than just linseed oil. Seizing the opportunity, Otho Jr. asked his father, Dr. Otho Behr Sr., an accomplished chemist, to help him develop a formula to meet their requirements. Soon the father-and-son team began making a clear finish and stain for redwood in the Behr family garage.

In 1948, Otho Behr moved his burgeoning business from the family garage into an 800 square foot Quonset hut in Pasadena, California.
Over the years, sales have steadily increased for this entrepreneurial, family-owned business.  As business grew, the need for larger facilities also grew.  The company, now officially known as BEHR Process Corporation, has since relocated to larger facilities and has expanded across the country and across the globe.  Today BEHR has locations and businesses all across the country in California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington, and internationally in Canada, China, Guam and India.

In 1986, BEHR expanded into the interior/exterior paint business, setting the stage for the next dynamic era of growth. Up until then, for over 39 years, BEHR had been a very successful stain and varnish manufacturer and now we are proud to say we earn top recognition for our premium paints, and have since their introduction in 1986.  

In 1999, after 52 years of private ownership, BEHR Process Corporation was acquired by Masco Corporation of Taylor, Michigan. The merging of Masco and BEHR successfully brought together two companies who share an entrepreneurial philosophy and an overarching commitment to integrity and to “doing the right thing.”

In 2007, another milestone was reached when BEHR, in partnership with The Home Depot-China, entered the Chinese marketplace.  With the introduction of BEHR Premium Plus® Paints and Primers to China, BEHR is breaking new ground by reaching this untapped DIY market.
